Hello guys,

We accidentally broke the bath in our rented property (dropped the shower head in). The bath doesn’t leak, it is a cosmetic issue only, ok, we agree, it has to be replaced.

The problem is this bath, and the whole bathroom suit is grey, so now the landlord wants to change everything (toilet, sink, bath), and ask us to pay the half of the costs. The bath suit is more than 30 years old.

Should we agree to pay the half (£300), or do we have another chance?
Thank you!

You definitely want to negotiate. First of all, you didn’t break it and it still works, so there is little reason to replace the bath entirely. You can agree to pay a fine to your landlord, or agree to a deduction from your deposit when the tenancy ends.

You should look into repairs to the bath that don’t require it’s replacement. I’m pretty sure something can be thought of.

Second, it’s absolutely absurd to replace the whole bathroom suite which is still working and functional.

Your landlord’s reaction is over the top.
