Entry without notice, Want to get my own lock?

Hi peeps!, Ok the landlord had gained entry to my place without notice, And clearly told me he had to my face, I do not think the estate agents themselves have yet though…, My argument is can I put my own lock on the door and refuse to give them a key, I am not denying access but want assurity to know my place is private and safe!, I checked through the T aggreement and could not find anything that specifically stated about putting my own lock on…..

Next thing is, My T agreement that I signed lasted for 6 months I have now been here 12 and never signed a new contract, Where does that leave me? and also in terms of what I can and can not do, And also what they can or can not do?

Let’s start from the latter. Since your fixed term has expired, you’re now on a rolling tenancy, which means both you and the landlord can quit at any time, so long as the proper notice is served (1 month for you, 2 months for the landlord). 

Changing the locks falls under what the law regards as “unauthorised alteration”. This means that if you change the lock you’re breaking the tenancy agreement. HOWEVER, since the landlord has already failed to protect your security and respect your privacy in your home, you have a strong argument in doing that. 

You should make sure to notify the landlord calmly and explain to them how and why you’re doing it. Negotiate to keep exclusive access of the property, but allow reasonable visits when proper notices are given. 

The problem for you is that if the landlord decides to evict you, you’re already on a rolling tenancy and they may simply use Section 21 eviction, which doesn’t require any reasoning. You may be able to defend your decision and fight the eviction in court, but it’s up to the judge to decide who wins and what they win.
