I currently live in a flat with my wife and 2 year old, we’ve been here for 2 years and are in the process of moving out as we’re emigrating. After the first week we realised there was a problem with Silverfish (finding 10 a day). When I contacted the landlord she emailed me back with the following “I really don’t understand why silverfish have suddenly appeared – in 6 yrs no one has ever seen them.” However I recently got in touch with the previous tenants and they have advised that they also advised the landlord of the silverfish problem and that they contacted the tenants before them who confirmed they suffered from a silverfish problem in the flat. During our 2 years I’ve had the flat sprayed 3 times but with no success. It’s become a real issue for my wife and young daughter, as the silverfish crawl over her toys and have been found in the cot. As we’re relocating we’ve started moving furniture and this has uncovered at least 100 more.
The landlord has clearly known of this issue but has lied to all tenants over a 6 year period. I can’t find anything in the tenancy agreement, however surely she has a responsibility? In those 6 years she would have charged over £100k (we paid £40k for 2 years).
Can anyone advise on the best next steps? Perhaps a solicitor to represent all 3 of the tenant groups?
Many thanks for any advice.
