Hello guys,

well I am leaving my place because my landlord, or better sub-contractor is quite egocentric and unfair. He asked me to pay the 2 remaininig months in advance to give the references for the new place. I agreed and paid.

Now, I told him I am moving on the the 6thof August (I should have said the end of the cotract which is the last day in September, but I wanted to be honest). If my feelings are correct he would ask me for the keys that day when I am moving. However, I am entitled to hold the keys until the end of the contract, which is till when I paid. I can also visit my place whenever I like since I am technically still the tenent.

What should I do if he wants to ask for the keys ? Should I refer to the police in case?

Hi Vincenzo,

The space is yors for the period you have paid for. He cannot enter it without your consent and he certainy cant re-let it and you are not required to surrender keys until your final date. You can visut the space whenever you want- its yours until your rent ‘runs out’.

What he did was completely illegal- a Landlord cannot leverage a reference against a rent payment- what is more, Tenants in the UK are only required to give 1 months notice whereas Landlords must give at least 2.

If he enters the property before the end date he is tresspassing and you can report the matter to the police (if you so wish) accordingly.

Hope that helps.
