Hope this is the right section.

I am looking for advice on what to do about my neighbours downstairs smoking cannabis. The tenant has moved a family member in recently and ever since about 3 or 4 times a day we have a strong smell of cannabis coming in. At first it was just a whiff of it lingering afterwards, I wasn’t too bothered. Now the whole flat and my clothes smell of it all the time.

Now fast forward a few weeks and the smell is really making me feel sick. I have a lung issue monitored by a consultant and am starting to get anxious as to whether this can affect my condition; does anyone know, I feel a bit stupid but if I can smell it really strongly can it affect me or do I have to be in the same room?

I feel really nervous about approaching them about this, should I tell the letting agency or if it’s in their flat is it even anything I can really report? I’m at the end of my tether now with the smell on everything. Can I just add I don’t care about people smoking it to be honest, my Dad smoked it sometimes for relief of pain, I just don’t like the smell of it on everything in my flat, it already smelt of smoke because the main tenant smokes like a chimne, now weed too 🙁

Any advice on what would be the best thing to do would be great, or what anyone did in a similar situation, thanks for reading.

Hi Claire,

Whilst this is illegal and a breach of lease this can be surprisingly hard to tackle. We recently had a very similar issue, but when the tenant ignored us, we contacted the police. They very simply stated they would not attend to tackle such an issue and that the landlord should address it.

I recommend writing a nce polite note, explaining your health issues and ask that they refrain from smoking inside the property. If they ignore this polite request then I would report the incident to the Block/Building Management Co, the Letting/Managing Agent and the Landlord. If that fails I would report ths issue to the local council and try your local police.

Hope that helps.
