Every time I see an add the big bold NO PETS flashes up, everyone I know who I mention this too says “oh they mean cats and dogs”, but do they? Does anyone have experience of renting with such pets?

It will depend on the individual landlord as to how it’s interpreted – as owners of the property they’re entitled to rent it to whoever they wish (while avoiding discrimination laws obviously) so if they deem a bird is a pet but a fish is fine then there’s not much that can be done about it.

With all ‘no pets’ signs it’s always worth asking – some landlords will change their minds if you offer them an extra deposit amount to cover the potential damage.
