Do you know if I have the right to refuse a certain man into my home to change my boiler, I have anxieties about men in my home when I’m alone and This man will Not come 30minutes later than planned to allow me to have my friend sit with me (or take me out of the house as it’s an All day job & I’d feel so unnerved), Since I asked this he became Off with me and Now I don’t even want to Leave him alone in my house, please help ? x

Hi Heather

I don’t think you have a right to refuse the workman entry unless that particular workman has done something to upset you. However, I would imagine you are well within your rights to ask them to come at a time when you feel less uncomfortable i.e. when you have a friend there, especially if it’s only 30 minutes later.

If you’re concerned about the workman then make sure you ask for their name and details in advance, give these to your friend so they know who is going to be in the house. You can also check out the workman – all engineers doing gas work are required to be gas safe registered – search them here, that might make you feel a little more reassured.
