Tenancy renewal required by insurance of Landlord?

We are renting a flat. Our fixed term tenancy ends this month and the letting agency has asked us to renew it for £60. We don’t want to do that because we are happy to have a periodic tenancy from now.

However, the agency now says that the landlord’s insurance is insisting that the tenancy is renewed.

Has anyone ever heard about a landlord’s insurance that requires a tenancy renewal?

99% certain that’s complete balony.  I’ve never come across such a claim in my many years dealing with these issues.


Ask for proof otherwise just stand firm and tell them you’re not signing.


If they refuse to hand over docs as proof then you can always ask for the name of the insurance provider and the type of insurance and then go direct to the insurer and ask the question.

Just to give an update about how this situation ended. We discovered that the contract had a clause that said that the landlord should provide copies of insurance policies that influence tenants’ decisions. So they said they were going to look it up. But irrespective of that, they still wanted a contract renewal. If we would have refused, they would just have ended the tenancy (with 2 months notice). But we’re already busy enough without moving house. So we did sign a renewal in the end, and paid the £60. But we negotiated that the renewal was for 1 year, with a periodic tenancy after 6 months. That gives us more or less what we want, even though we had to pay for it.
