Q: The fixed term of my AST agreement is coming to an end and the letting agent wants to charge me a fee for renewal. Is this fair?

A. Letting Agents should be upfront about all of their fees and charges. Check your tenancy agreement as well as their website – if it is not listed as a charge payable by the tenant in either of these documents then you should not have to pay for this. In some cases, landlords are willing to pay the letting agent fee as a sign of good will as they benefit from full occupancy of their property.
