Q: Realistically, I cannot afford the new rent so should I just move out?

Perhaps, but before you hand in your notice politely tell your landlord you can’t afford the new rent and intend to move. If you have been a good tenant, the landlord might even want to compromise and offer you a smaller increase in rent. Just as tenants dread bad landlords, so do landlords dread bad tenants; they sometimes accept a smaller profit in order to hold on to a reliable payer.
