You are allowed to ask the council to review their decision to refuse your application to be put on their housing list – but it is advisable to think very carefully before challenging them. That’s because you run the risk of being expelled from the list if you make future applications. The uncomfortable fact is you just might be regarded as not being a suitable candidate for council housing. There are many reasons this might happen, for instance the waiting list has thousands of people on it and your needs are deemed slight.

However, if you believe the council has got it badly wrong or you feel they may have discriminated against you, then it is worth you taking the matter up with them. But seek advice first from Citizen’s Advice, Shelter or your MP.
